April
Leaving.
The car is packed and the house is already taken care of. Before you go, we walk it together: the air conditioning and humidity set for summer, the refrigerator cleared, the mail redirected, the outdoor furniture where you want it, and every key you hand us signed for. You lock the door once and drive away without a list.
The only thing you take with you is the trip.
September
The storm.
A named storm turns toward the Gulf, and you are watching the track from a thousand miles away. Your plan is already on file, so the house is readied the way we agreed. When the weather clears, we visit as soon as it is safe and send you photographs, room by room.
You learn how your home is from us, not from the news.
Any month
Living here.
You live here most of the year. On the monthly visit your Home Manager changes the filters, tests the detectors, and notices the slow drip under the guest-bath sink before it marks the cabinet. A licensed plumber is arranged, you are told what was found, and that is the last you think about it.
The plumber came. Your tee time did not move.
November
Coming home.
You land, and the house is waiting the way you left it — cool, fresh, the water run, the lights on, a few groceries in the refrigerator. Nothing to fix, nothing to chase, nothing to call about.
You open the door, and the season simply begins.
